8 Reasons why we love (affordable) PORTUGAL

  1. Portugal is one of Europe’s most hidden and untouched treasures. It is also one of the warmest and most affordable European summer destinations. There are many traditional villages as well as lively cities, a charming countryside and many historic gems…
  2. Lisbon, Portugal’s capital, is a large and vibrant city. Intriguing side streets, classic trams and enchanting piazza’s set the scene. Lisbon offers a large variety of restaurants, bohemian cafes and fascinating boutiques. Remember to visit the beautiful Cascais region, only 30 minutes from Lisbon by train and can be compared to Camps Bay in Cape Town…
  3. Visit romantic Sintra, one of the most beautiful towns and forests in Portugal. Many people compare Sintra to the Garden of Eden! It is filled with castles, palaces, decadent manor houses, beautiful gardens and winding cobblestone streets…It is a short 25-minute train journey from Lisbon. Don’t forget to try the delicious Portuguese Custard Tarts (Pasteis de Nata) at one of the many cafés and pastry shops!
  4. Portugal boasts numerous picturesque vineyards and a variety of excellent local wines. At the start of the 18th century England approached Portugal for a large quantity of wine, as the English was at war with France during this time. The wine, sadly enough, did not last the long journey as it fermented rather rapidly and was eventually fortified with brandy. This beverage then became known as Porto, or Port. Today, this beautiful wine region is also called Porto and a ‘must visit’ coastal city in Northwest Portugal. We can also strongly recommend a full day excursion on (or along) the Douro River!
  5. Did you know?  More than half of the world’s cork production comes from Portugal!
  6. South Africa and Portugal has a very long history! Bartholomeu Dias explored the coasts of South Africa in 1486, and Vasco da Gama recorded a sighting of the Cape of Good Hope in 1497, en route to India. When visiting Lisbon and specifically Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of the Discoveries) on the northern bank of the Tagus River, you will find the most amazing mosaic pavement (right in front of the monument). It was sponsored by the South African government in 1960 and represents a world map (and compass) with the specific routes Portuguese explorers sailed many centuries ago….
  7. The coastal scenery (better known as the Algarve region) is dramatic and beautiful and a world-famous surfing destination. Madeira, an alluring island off the Portuguese coast is a must see during your visit to this beautiful country…
  8. Portugal is not only one of the most affordable destinations, but also one of the most child-friendly destinations…
